I’m still struggling, as many writers do, with working out how to build an audience more. I’m hoping people are finding the YouTube channel interesting, but me blathering on to camera about myself must be boring for other people. What would people actually like to see and hear? More playlists, book reviews, other types of review, readings from my novels?
The added complication to this, and I’ll be completely honest here, is that I want to know what sort of content will make people read my books, or increase the likelihood of doing so. I could post more controversial ideas and arguments, but that would no doubt backfire, and might provoke heated abusive exchanges, but wouldn’t be likely to help my readership expand. I also dislike the social media tendency to post controversy just to get engagement. If you truly believe something, fine, but I think a lot of what gets posted is just clickbait. I don’t really want to go down that route.
It’s very disheartening to spend so much time writing, editing, marketing, and then see flatlines for sales though. Without being arrogant, I know that my stories are as good as many others out there. They may not be to everyone’s tastes, which is fine, but I don’t think it is the quality of the stories which is lacking in the main. It is that elusive marketing something. So, if you know the secret, send on a postcard. Or tweet me. I’m very tweetable!
Stay safe,
