Review: The Hook – Catherine Morrison

The Hook is a fast paced mystery romance, part crime, part love story. Kate, the protagonist, is a force of nature, solving mysteries, making jaded journalists fall in love with her, cooking perfect dishes and not getting annoyed at the man calling her “babe” all the time, like I did! This book is the very definition of what you’d called a page turner, and is tailor made for the type of Netflix treatment (possibly with Natalie Dormer and Nick Cage), ticking all those boxes that add up to a hugely fun read. The only thing that really perplexed me was the title, as my hoped for ‘one-handed shadowy killer with an eyepatch and parrot on the shoulder’ didn’t emerge, so I’m not certain what the ‘Hook’ was, though the characters and plot certainly had me “hooked.” I apologise for that awful joke. I’ll get my coat.

From the pitch

Impulsive thirty-something, Kate Turner, arrives in New York on a mission to right a wrong. Posing as a reporter she enlists the help of the more grounded New York Times editor, Mike Kelly, a divorcee ten years her senior. Sparks fly as they try to uncover the motives for embezzlement and murder, and they embark on a whirlwind romance that is almost certain to fail. Will she let him break down her defences? Will he still want to when he discovers her lie?
